The Making of 'the public domain'

Experience the world premiere of David Lang's new piece for 1,000 voices.

David Lang, Composer

Simon Halsey, Conductor

A Q&A with David Lang

Click here to read a conversation with the composer about "Teaching the World to Sing."

What is the public domain?

In the spirit of the Mostly Mozart Festival’s conception, the world premiere of the public domain by Pulitzer Prize winner David Lang will be a performance that not only welcomes the public as a free and open event, but will also be performed by the public. A piece inspired by the theme of the collective knowledge shared amongst us all, the composition will be performed on Saturday, August 13, by 1,000 volunteer vocalists from throughout New York City, conducted by Simon Halsey, Choral Director of the London Symphony Orchestra. Make your Lincoln Center debut by lending your voice to this unique event.

The Mostly Mozart Festival presentation of the public domain is made possible in part by the generous support of Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund.

Participation Requirements

PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum 2 rehearsals are required before August 2.

All groups will have 2 mandatory rehearsals August 2-13, plus the dress rehearsal on the morning of the performance on August 13 before the performance at 5pm.

All adult participants must officially register through this website.  Children (recommended ages 10+) are welcome to sing but must be accompanied by an adult or guardian and signed up on-site at their first rehearsal.

Please read the FAQs before registering.

GROUP SELECTION PROCEDURE:

Please review the schedules and locations carefully. Select a group that works best for you, and if at all possible your second choice. Due to limited capacity of our rehearsal venues, we may not be able to confirm everyone for their first choice. If you do not have a second option, please leave it blank.

NOTIFICATION OF GROUP ASSIGNMENT:

You will be contacted only if you are confirmed for a place.  Once you are confirmed for a group, every time you log into the public domain microsite you will be directed to your group’s page that will include specific rehearsal information, including transportation and exact location details, and any helpful tips and updates that we can pass along.

Please be aware that all singers may be filmed or photographed over the course of the rehearsal process and during the final performance of this project. All participants will be required to sign a release to this effect at their first rehearsal and will not be permitted to perform without it.

FAQ

Why do I need to register?

We need everyone to select a group to join as part of the registration process as this will help us prevent overcrowding at our rehearsal venues, which have limited capacity.

We also need everyone to complete the registration process, including the required waiver, so we can maintain accurate attendance records and be able to communicate updates and critical information to each participant.

What will the rehearsals sessions be like?

Rehearsals will be approximately three hours long, with at least one scheduled break during the session.

Each group will be led by a music rehearsal director who will teach the music and lead you through every rehearsal and the performance. Each group will also have a staging rehearsal director who will teach the simple movement you will do as individuals and how you will move as a group. Rehearsals will be enjoyable and a great place to make new friends!

Once you have received confirmation of your group, you will find more detailed information on your group page about what to expect at rehearsals and helpful tips.

Where will we be rehearsing?

Rehearsals will be held in various types of venues—theaters, community centers, and churches.

They will be close to public transportation. There will be some variations in the locations due to scheduling issues.

I would like my children to participate. How do I sign them up?

Children between the ages of 10 and 17 are welcome to join the public domain!

In order to register a minor, as a parent or guardian you must first register to sing yourself and bring your child/children to the first rehearsal to sign them up in person.

You will be required to sign the appropriate release form(s) for the child or children at that time.

Click here to download the minor release form in advance; otherwise there will be forms available at rehearsal check-in.

I am a choir leader. Can I sign up myself and bring my choir without registering them?

We need each singer to complete the registration process. Please tell your choir members which rehearsal group you want them to all register for.

If for any reason your choir members are unable to sign up via the website, please email our cast coordinator for further information.

Do I have to rehearse with the same group every week or can I attend another group’s rehearsal date and location?

Due to the structure of the music and performance, every group will have its own unique part and movement, so we need singers to remain in their groups throughout the rehearsal process.

I signed up before. Do I need to sign up again?

Yes. Even if you signed up to the email list before, we now need you to complete the official registration process.

I sing in a choir. Do I have to register as an individual?

Yes. We need all singers to register individually. Please coordinate directly with your choir director to know which group to register for.

What will the music be like? Will it be difficult?

The score will have some singing and some easy instructions, and some talking and whispering. It will be simple to put together, but at the same time it will require rehearsals conducted in groups.

How long is the piece and do I have to memorize it?

The performance will be about 40 minutes long. You will not have to sing through every minute of the performance. You will not need to memorize the words.

How will I learn the music and what to do?

Music and movement directors will teach everything you need to know about the music and movement.

I don’t read music. Can I still participate?

Yes. If you have a good ear for music you will be fine.

Will there be an orchestra or a band?

No. We are relying entirely on everyone’s voices!

Will there be dancing or choreography I need to learn?

Yes. There will be some choreographed movement that goes with the singing, and it will be very simple and specific. There will not be any dance routines and no dance training is required.

What will the staging of the performance be like?

The performance will be outdoors in the afternoon of August 13 on the Josie Robertson Plaza at Lincoln Center.

All performers will stand for the entire performance, currently estimated at 40 minutes, without a break. There will be additional standing, and walking time will be required as performers move into position for the start of the event.

Wheelchairs, walking aids, and participants with special needs can be accommodated.

Will I have to wear a costume?

No.

I have other questions about the performance. Who can I ask?

If you have any questions about the performance that have not been addressed here, please feel free to email our cast coordinator, and she will respond as quickly as possible.

Will I be paid?

No. All singers will be volunteers, but we hope the experience will provide everyone with priceless memories and experiences.
